Allan was a regular in the great team of the 1970s which rose up the leagues with regularity.

Perhaps not the most committed of trainers his game was built around his raw agricultural strength and power. His pick-ups from a five yard scrum were nigh on unstoppable and his hand off was up there with that of his late teammate Colin Young.

These talents saw him represent Edinburgh.

In later years he played in the very capable, and extremely sociable, 4th XV with many of his old teammates.
