Commemorations to mark 100 years since the end of WW1

As part of the commemorations to mark 100 years since the end of the first world war, there will be a minute's silence before the 1stXV game v St Boswells on Saturday as a mark of respect for the six members of the club who made the ultimate sacrifice.

We are indebted to the good work of John Hamilton and others at the Community Council who have marked the centenary by organising metal thistles with the names of all those in the town who gave their lives, which are now placed at the wee park opposite the Bell (formerly the Railway).
On the date of their death the thistles were walked behind a piper from their last known address to the park.
Andrew Cunningham managed to do two such walks, Keith Wallace another.
Both described the honour as incredibly poignant. Honorary President, Davy Leckie also piped a good number himself.
Five of the Dead are annotated in this photograph (Note AC Stevenson did in fact survive) with the sixth being George Reid.
Since this is our first ever team photo, we owe them an enormous debt.
For the record the six are:
Francis Burnet, founder and first Captain, uncle of great stalwart Frank Burnet. Died Age 26
John Hutchison, one of five brothers who played for the Club, one Ander a founder member, family house now owned by Gordon Bathgate. Died Age 23
Robert Goodall, Died Age 25
Alexander Faunt, Died Age 22
George Reid, Died Age 25
G Sandilands, Age at Death unknown.

Their ages at death suggest that the average age of our first ever team was probably 19.
Records show fittingly that our first ever win was 10th November 1911, a game some of them would have played in.
What better way than to mark 107 years t the day, with a win!
