Reds beaten but positives from second half showing

Head coach Bryan Craig was pleased with his side's second-half performance in Fife, despite another heavy defeat, at the hands of Kirkcaldy

The home side were able to call upon captain Garry Cockburn and Rab Watt, who returned to the front row, while Alex Ferguson regained the number 10 jersey after several weeks on the sidelines, and Eck Watt was recalled on the wing.
Both sides battled tricky conditions early on, with Armandt Pryor - back from his trip home over Christmas - breaking a number of tackles before kicking ahead, only to see a covering Kirkcaldy defender gather the loose ball and clear.
But the hosts struck first, after a missed tackle in midfield allowed Dayle Turner to go over. The conversion was missed into the strong wind, but Kirkcaldy led 5-0.
Rhys Bonner was introduced as an early replacement for the hosts, and he crossed twice in quick succession to move the score on to 17-0, with Craig Letham adding one conversion, from in front of the posts.
And Turner went over for the bonus-point score just before half-time, as the county club faced an uphill battle to get anything from the match, turning around 26-0 down at the break.
The Reds introduced Jock MacKay at stand-off at the break, with Ferguson moving to scrum-half as part of a backline reshuffle, with Kyle Adams in midfield and Pryor into the pack.
MacKay made an instant impact with a crunching tackle close to the Reds line, as the visitors pressed again, before dusting himself off to complete the clearing kick after the visitors won turnover ball.
Despite the Reds’ improved start to the second half, it was again the home side who struck again, as Bonner went over for his hat-trick.
Letham added the extras and made it 33-0.
Despite their chances of victory fading fast, the visitors refused to lie down, and were rewarded when Pryor went over from short range.
And they doubled their efforts shortly after, with a poignant try for MacKay - as he barged his way over from close range, four years to the day since the passing of his father, the then club vice-president Davie.
The Reds should have added to their tally, but winger Rob McLuckie failed to gather a pass from captain Cockburn with the line at his mercy, and the chance went missing, before the skipper knocked-on a quickly tapped penalty close to the Kirkcaldy line.
That was as good as it got for the travelling Reds support, though, as a late double from Chris Mann, and one by Kurt Littlejohn sealed a 52-10 victory.
Haddington head coach Bryan Craig will have been encouraged by large parts of the second half performance, but disappointed that they conceded over half a century of points on their travels once more this season.
His charges will have the chance to bounce back, but face a stern test against league leaders Howe of Fife at Neilson Park on Saturday, kick-off 2pm.
