Haddington sweep aside young Duns side in thirteen try thriller.

Haddington made it back-to-back wins in the Tennent’s East League Division One to take them to second position in the league.
On a glorious Autumn afternoon at Neilson Park, the Reds were quick off the mark after scoring a try with only six minutes of play gone on the clock. Outside-centre, Kyle Hamilton made a break up the middle after some poor tackling from Duns and fed Harvey Blake to cross the line. Unfortunately, Donald Bathgate missed the tough conversion to keep it at 5-0.
It took until the 20th minute of play for Haddington to get back on to the scoreboard, with winger James Dewar going in for his first of three tries on the day. However, the young Duns side responded quickly and managed to break down the solid Haddington defence to cross the whitewash to make it 10-7.
On the 30-minute mark, Haddington were awarded a penalty and opted to kick to the corner, with Bathgate kicking Duns back onto their own five-meter line. With the lineout won, play was taken up the middle by the Reds. Quick ball from the ruck allowed Hugo Elder to pick his line and the big second row galloped over the try line to take the scores to 15-7. Bathgate added the extras to take it to 17-7.
In the last ten minutes of the first half, Haddington managed to score a further four tries through Ross Morrison (2), James Dewar and Colin Stuart to end the half 43-14 up.
With Haddington now playing back down towards the clubhouse in the second half, James Dewar went in for his third and last try of the day with only a minute of play gone. Donald Bathgate was on hand again to add the extra two points. 50-14.
The Reds continued to pile the pressure on Duns in their own half, however the Duns fly-half managed to clear the ball from deep. Winger, Dewar was able to keep the ball in play and feed it back into the midfield. Some great interplay between the Haddington back three players, created some space for Harvey Blake to get his second try of the day.
Credit must go to this young Duns side, who didn’t give up. However, Haddington continued to control possession throughout and dominated in attack and defence. Steven Tennant, Kyle Munro, Andrew Durkin (Man of the Match) and Colin Stuart all scoring in the last quarter of the game to allow Haddington to take the deserving win, 81-14.
Next up, Haddington face Corstorphine RFC in a friendly away from home this Saturday but return to league action on the 8th of October to face league leaders, North Berwick at home. Please come down and support the club. KO 3pm.
