Reds no match for league leaders

Webmaster Web Master11 Nov 2015 - 13:44

Haddington fell to defeat on the road once more on Saturday, as they were well beaten by league leaders GHK.

The Reds travelled west hoping to become the first team to beat GHK this season, but they were never in contention as the table-toppers recorded their eighth consecutive win.
Rhodri Thomas brought in Alex Cunningham at hooker, with captain Colin Stuart moving to prop in the absence of Alan Laidlaw in the pack, while James Ferguson’s return saw Connor Munro drop to the bench.
Haddington made a poor start to the match, and conceded two early tries as they went 14-0 down inside the opening quarter of an hour.
Head coach Thomas said after the match: “We started slowly and allowed GHK to build up an early lead which put us on the back foot.
“They were well organised and made full use of the possession they had in the first half.”
Haddington had enjoyed little possession and territory in the first quarter and struggled to get into the match, despite the best efforts of their industrious pack.
Further tries for GHK back-row duo Borthwick and Parker ensured the hosts had wrapped up the four-try bonus point before the interval.
Thomas’ side did rally after the brea, and put pressure on the home side, with Jack Hamilton again lively at scrum-half and Kris Paterson (pictured above vs Orkney) and Jonny Riddell once more industrious in the Haddington back-row.
Phill Smith made his first appearance of the season after returning from Sweden, and the big tighthead caught the eye after his second-half cameo, while Mark Renton was impressive after replacing McGarvie on 25 minutes.
Despite those indivdual performances, the visitors struggled to get into the matc, and two more scores after the break killed the match as a contest, leaving Haddington with nothing but pride to play for.
The first – a superb solo try from Tony Herron – cane against the run of play as the visitors built pressure inside the home side’s 22, before Herron broke away and beat the covering defenders to score.
And the same player went over again with just over half an hour to play - the last scoring act of the day.
And a typically upbeat Thomas reflected post-match: “Our second half was much better. We were able to get our attacking game going and created a couple of opportunities. We can take a lot of heart from our second-half performance and will work hard in training during the week as we aim to get back to winning ways.”
A disappointing afternoon for the travelling contingent as the club failed to register a point in a league match for the first time this season.
The squad will hope to get back on track this weekend, with Livingston the visitors to Neilson Park on Saturday, kick-off 2pm.
