Reds put in gritty performance to see off Berwick

Haddington recorded their second win of the season over Berwick, with tries either side of the break giving the visitors victory at Scremerston.

Head coach Rhodri Thomas praised his side as they recorded a hard-fought win at Berwick on Saturday.
Tries from Kyle Adams and Kyle Hamilton guided the county side to a 10-5 win in testing conditions.
The hosts struck back late on, but were unable to take any more than a losing bonus point from the encounter.
And Thomas praised the squad for their efforts in testing conditions at Scremerston.
He saidt: “Conditions were difficult and I was delighted with the way we got the win. Our defence was outstanding and didn’t allow Berwick many opportunities.
“We have put ourselves in a great position and are looking forward to the Dumfries game on Saturday."
Welshman Thomas brought in Charlie Hamilton to the starting line-up, as he replaced brother Harry in the second row, while Ian Watt was handed a recall on the wing, and Mark Robertson and Alex Cunningham returned to the squad, joining Kyle McGarvie on the bench.
Berwick started the match brightly, with most of the play taking place in the Haddington half, but the Reds’ defence was resolute, as they repelled attack after attack.
Haddington got their reward as half-time neared when a quick tap penalty was worked through the hands to Kyle Hamilton, and the former North Berwick man barged his way over for the game’s opening try.
Gareth Pritchard missed the conversion into a testing wind.
They may have added to that total in the half’s closing play as a break from James Ferguson was backed up by Garry Cockburn, who was stopped just short of the line.
The former skipper reached out for the line, but was deemed to have knocked on by the referee, and the try was chalked off.
It remained 5-0 until the break, but the Reds did not have long to wait to add to their score.
Following a period of pressure in the Berwick half the ball was once more put through the hands and Kyle Adams eventually went over out wide.
Pritchard missed the conversion, but the Reds held a 10-point lead.
It stayed that way until a late Berwick try, but the visitors held out to ensure they clinched a league double over the Scremerston side.
The 1st XV will return to Neilson Park action this weekend, with Dumfries Saints the visitors on Saturday.
