Head coach Rhodri Thomas praised his side as they kicked off the new year with a hard-fought win over RHC at Neilson Park on Saturday.
Back-row Kris Paterson (pictured in action against Berwick) crossed for the Reds’ only try, while stand-off Gareth Pritchard added nine points from the kicking tee.
And Thomas was delighted to see the Reds extend their winning run to five matches.
Post-match, the Welshman said: “I’m really pleased to start 2016 with another win and to keep pushing at the top of the league.
“Our defence was excellent, which frustrated RHC as they were unable to build a score.
“We took advantage of the opportunities we had and kept the scoreboard moving by taking points when they were on offer.”
The Reds started the match well with Pritchard landing a penalty to put them 3-0 ahead.
Skipper Colin Stuart thought he had the game’s first try after he dived over, but the referee disallowed it and penalised Stuart for a double movement.
Pritchard landed a second first-half penalty, but the visitors turned round ahead at the break thanks to their only try of the match, which went unconverted.
Despite the half-time deficit, the Reds had dominated for large spells, with Liam Clutton and Kyle Hamilton again showing up well in midfield, and props Dunlop and Cockburn dominant in the set-piece.
Paterson grabbed his try after good work by the home pack. They worked the ball inside the RHC 22 and, after several drives for the line, the openside burrowed his way over.
Pritchard missed the conversion but landed a penalty to move the score to 14-5.
The visitors had a chance to leave with a losing bonus point, but a last-minute penalty sailed wide and the Reds held on to record the double over the capital outfit.
And they will hope to extend their winning run when they travel to Irvine on Saturday.
