Captain Garry Cockburn scored a try just after the break, with Nick Bell's conversion and a late penalty from replacement Alex Ferguson securing the draw.
The match started well for Bryan Craig's side, who were offered two shots at the uprights within the first five minutes. However, the first kick at goal were struck off the post, while Bell pushed his second attempt wide of the mark.
The hosts began to dominate the proceedings, with strong forward play to the fore. When Haddington conceded a penalty right in front. Stand-off Jamie Moffat didn't waste the opportunity and put the home side ahead.
(3-0)
He then missed a further shot at the uprights before declining a third attempt, and electing to kick for touch. From the resulting line-out, the home side powered over and had simultaneously powered themselves into a 10-0 lead.
That was the end of the scoring in the first period, but there were worried looks on the travelling supporters' faces at the interval.
HALF-TIME: Kirkcaldy 10-0 Haddington RFC
It was though, a different story after the break, with captain Cockburn, Paris and Paterson to the fore as the pack began to restore parity.
Mamea carried us over the advantage line, and the back-three of Neil Watt, Andrew Symington and debutante Grant Mollison looked increasingly lively.
The try was not long in coming, and following strong work from the returning Ross Martin, it was Cockburn who squeezed over. Bell added the conversion to bring the club back into the game (10-7).
There were scoring chances for both sides, but the visitors were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty try when Symington raced clear, only to be hauled down from a high-tackle just metres from the line.
The referee did, however, show a yellow card and the visitors could sense the opportunity.
Then, with just minutes to go and the visitors increasing the intensity on the Kirkcaldy line, the pressure told and the home side conceded a penalty.
Replacement Alex Ferguson, who replaced Bell just minutes before, slotted the penalty and brought the scores level (10-10).
Late drama was to follow as Jamie Moffat struck the crossbar with two minutes to go from a long-range penalty, but Haddington held on to claim a valuable two points on the road and go some way to avenging the drubbing received in Fife last season.
