The match started badly for the visitors, with recalled hooker Craig Harrison forced out after injury struck in the warm-up. With no replacement hooker on the replacements bench, that meant a re-shuffle of the pack.
Things didn't get much better for head coach Craig, who watched on as the home side took an early lead, scoring within the first five minutes.
However, their advantage was short-lived as clever work from stand-off Nick Bell put Andrew Symington away with some sharp passing. Former West of Scotland winger Symington scored. Bell hit the crossbar with a difficult conversion, so the scores were tied at 5-5
The visitors, at this point, were firmly on top, and a brilliant kick ahead from James Ferguson, moved to full-back following the withdrawal of Neil Watt on the morning of the match, allowed the recalled Grant Mollison to win the footrace and score in the corner.
Mollison's first try for the club was again unconverted, as Bell's attempt flashed across the face of the uprights.
The match was ebbing-and-flowing and the hosts were the next to strike, as a Haddington mistake allowed them to score their second try of the opening half-hour. Another missed conversion, and it was all-square again at 10-apiece.
While his brother was on fine kicking form for the 2nds, James Ferguson was causing havoc in the Livingston defence, and his marvellous run brought about the club's third try of the first half hour. Nick Bell was this time on song with the kick, and we took the lead for the first time.
Livingston added a penalty before the break, but it was a lead for the visitors at half-time, 13-17.
The second half, though, will have disappointed the coaching staff, as Bell and his opposite number exchanged penalties.
With just ten minutes to play, Livingston centre Andy McMahon burst through weak tackling to score the match's decisive try, reflecting their dominance in the second period.
The home side hit a late drop-goal through Gavin Douglas, meaning the Reds were chasing a try to win the game - and it was not to be as Livingston held on to claim their first win of the season.
